13 year old daughters knee (osgood schlatters)

by maura
(bolingbrook, il)

My 13 year old daughter has started running cross country and now her knee hurts. The doctor gave it some German name and prescribed physical therapy, but the knee is not any better. Any ideas? We do ice and ibuprofen on a regular basis.

Shoe inserts, stretching, hip strengthening
by: Bart - SII

Osgood Schlatters is what I imagine your doctor diagnosed her with - it is a condition where there is a traction type stress on the bone where the patellar tendon inserts in the front of the knee. It is common in young athletes, especially if they have had a recent growth spurt - The good news is that it generally goes away with time.

She might benefit from a biomechanical evaluation of her gait - how her feet are structured and how they look when she walks - shoe inserts that increase arch support can sometimes take some stress off of the knee. She may also benefit from stretching of the hamstrings and hip flexors, as well a hip strengthening - you might talk to her PT about exercises for the hip abductors, external rotators, and lower abdominals.
