13 year old Knee Reconstruction

by Emily
(Australia)

I was 13 when i hurt my knee in a practice match.
i didn't think it would be very serious i thought i must have just badly sprained my knee..
i went on holidays then went to a doctor and physio..
they said they think i need a knee reconstruction
i then went to melb and talked to the surgeon and worked out when i was going to get the operation..
then 3 weeks after i got my knee operated on..
i thought i was very young to be having a full knee reconstruction.

13 is young

Unfortunately you are very young for a reconstruction, but sometimes that is what is needed for a full recovery. I have had a few patients who were your age that went through an ACL reconstruction, and others with different types of knee surgeries.

Good luck with your recovery.

Don't do it.

I was 15 when I had my knee reconstruction (patella realignment). They need to wait for the bones to finish growing (which they can tell by Xrays, I think).

I had my surgery as a result of my knee disclocating pretty badly, this is what the specialist recommended and not knowing much about knee injuries, we put our faith in his decision.

I would recommend not going ahead with the surgery and trying to wait as long as possible. Swimming is really good to strenghen the muscles, as is physiotherapy (they can give you taping methods which although its annoying).

I wish someone had told me this. I am now 30 and contemplating total knee replacement just to live my day to day life!

Hey thats awefull. I had similar injury at 13. I tour my ACL and meniscus added to a sevier bone bruise. I ended up with scar tissue build up as well. It was awefull, but I worked my butt off and got back to playing my four sports! I wish you the best.
