14 Year Old With Broken Ankle

My son just broke his ankle today skateboarding, small crack in the end of the tibia up to the growth plate. He starts high school tomorrow, he has been conditioning for football all summer and was a starting lineman.

How long does a break like this usually take to heal in a teenager? He is heartbroken knowing he wont be on the field for a while.

I hate hearing about hard working athletes who end up with an injury right before or at the beginning of the season. Seems so unfair that they work so hard and then have to sit out.

6 weeks is the normal healing time for a fracture - most physicians follow this, with a little wiggle room on either side - it really depends on how it heals and where the fracture is. If your sons fracture didn't cross into the growth plate, this is probably what you are looking at. If it did, it could be a bit longer.

The bright side is that hopefully he won't miss the whole season...the downside is that the first few games are probably out.
