I displaced my 5th Metatarsal and had surgery the next day with a screw placement. It has been 1 week and my toes are all black and bruised. Is that normal??

4th and 5th metatarsol break NEW
by: RC

May 26, 2014 I broke my 4th and 5th metatarsol. . . long story short a lizard scared me I thought it was going to run up my leg i jumped so high and came down so hard on my foot and broke the bones. Worst thing ever!!! So had surgery one week after the initial brake went in had two k wires put in my left foot. After going to the recovery room I was so sick feeling nauseas and had a headache stay there for most of the day and into the evening when I came home just had to sleep until anestisia wore off. The pain was tolerable but wasn't sure how long the block would work so in the middle of the night I took a vicodine but that was it. The following morning my foot felt tight, swollen, burning, tingling, and just unccomfortable. Now I am four weeks post op very little pain but still burning every night. Not sure what's going on with that but last i checked my doc said it could be nerve damage. Have doc visit next week at 5 weeks hoping I will be able to bear weight because I can't stand my crutches. Oh and whenever I am standing my foot still swells. Anyway hope this helps anyone out there going through the same or similar situation.

Parrot Toes NEW
by: Marc

Like others, I too have the problem of the baby toe not touching the ground with my foot flat on the floor. I had surgery on January 20th where they placed a pin in the 5th metatarsal. It was removed in early April and I'm able to wear tennis shoes and somewhat walk but the area below the 5th metartarsal appears to be somewhat swollen and appears to be the reason the baby toe does not touch the floor. When I was first able to put weight on the foot, all four toes, except the big toe were badly bent. The physical therapist referred to this as parrot toe and stated it was the result of the tendons not being used for several months. She also mentioned that the swelling on the bottom of the foot could possibly be the result of internal tissue growth and might never go away. Now, I'm more worried than ever that I might never walk normally again. Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

2weeks post op NEW
by: Anonymous

I had Jones fracture surgery 2 weeks ago and went well. Only had pain maybe 3 days after surgery. In half cast, non weight bearing. Dr put me on blood thinners and I kept leg up as much as possible especially the first week and did ice packs for at least 3 days post op. Having some pain off and on around ankle on side of incision . a little worried what foot will look like since been wrapped for 2 weeks.

5th metatarsal fracture-jones NEW

I side stepped and broke my 5th metatarsal bone..a true jones fracture I am told. I basically was on crutches non weight bearing for 6 weeks, no healing, complete break, had surgery after the six weeks and was on crutches with another cast, non weight bearing for 2.5 weeks, currently supposed to be wearing a walking cast but after surgery that thing makes me strain other bones and muscles way too easily..not to mention I was in a cast for 8 weeks already..I decided to let me leg breathe, use my crutches as needed if I get really worn out and hobble along, if things were painful I would not be able to do this, but so far, I can notice improvement and the strength in my leg is coming back a little more each day. I rather use my other leg to compensate for my rt legs weakness so I can give it just the right amount of support, versus using the walking cast/boot that limits my range and makes me further injure myself while not allowing my muscles to be used during this healing process. That is what I am doing. I personally cannot handle another day in the cast when I am doing just fine without it, I may use one crutch here and there if I need to limp faster, but I know my body and what my foot can handle, each person has their own limitations. My advice is do what is best for your foot, as you will know your limitations.

5th metatarsal fracture NEW

I am so thankful that I got a second opinion. I first saw an orthopedic surgeon who spoke to me for 3 minutes and then had his nurse explain the whole process to me. I would have had a plaster cast to the knee for 6 to 8 weeks and physical therapy. As well as stitches that would need to be removed. After seeing the foot and ankle specialist who spoke to me for 45 minutes, I knew what kind of break I had which was a spiral break. I had my 5th metatarsal surgery on December 21, 2011. I had three screws put in and am in a non weight bearing boot. My stitches are underneath the skin and do not need to be removed. At 4 weeks post-op, my toes are still yellow and a little swollen. I have had x-rays every other week. Very uncomfortable at first but now just some pinching in my toes and my ankle is sore from the heavy boot. In two weeks, I will be put in a weight bearing shoe. I am so happy I went to see another doctor. Can't wait to return to power walking.

Bruising NEW
by: Anonymous

To Megan: my doctor did xrays each week postop to check healing, by 5 weeks most of the bruising was fading. I have alot of broken blood vessels but that is just cosmetic. Ran a 5k last week and no pain:). I was not able, nor did i try, to run for 10 weeks postop. My suggestion is not to rush

E.A.I. I'm having the same problem with my shoes and baby toe. It would be great if someone could respond and let us know if this is something that will get better over time. I have a job that I'm on my feet 8-10 hours a day. I go back to work in 2 weeks.

MY 5TH METATARSAL EXPERIENCE
by: E.A.L

I BROKE MY 5TH METATARSAL ON MAY 7TH 2001 AND IN MY CASE I HAD TO HAVE THE SURGERY. I HAD THE SURGERY ON MAY 24TH 2011. IT WAS HORRIBLE BECAUSE ABOUT 3 TO 4 HRS AFTER THE WHATEVER IT WAS THEY GAVE ME OR PUT INTO THE FOOT TO NUMB IT STARTING WEARING OFF AND I ALMOST LOST MY MIND. THAT WAS THE MOST HORRIBLE PAIN THAT I HAVE EVER HAD AND I NEVER HAD ANY PAIN THAT SEVERE IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. DR. PRESCRIBED PERCOSET BUT IT DIDN'T WORK. HE ALSO GAVE ME VICOPROPHEN AND I HAD TO TAKE TWO TO FEEL ANY TYPE OF COMFORT. NONTHELESS, I ENDURED THAT FOR 4 DAYS, IT SLOWED DOWN BY DAY 3 THEN I WAS TOLD 6 WEEKS IN A CAST BUT NEVER KNEW I HAD TO WEAR A CAM WALKER, I HAD KNOW IDEA WHAT THAT WAS. ANYWAY, I WORE THE CAST FOR 6 WEEKS TWO DAYS AND THE BOOT FOR A MONTH. BY THE END OF AUGUST I AT A CHECK UP I WAS TOLD I COULD START WEARING SNEAKERS. THIS IS WHEN I BEGIN TO REALLY NOTICE A DIFFERENCE IN MY BABY TOE. IT IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM BEFORE AND DOESN'T MATCH THE LEFT FOOT. IT MAINLY DOESN'T LAY FLAT WHEN ON A FLAT SURFACE AND IT DOESN'T FIT RIGHT IN MY SHOES THAT I HAD. IT IS LIFTED AND LOOKS AS IF IT'S NOW SHORTER OR PULLED BACK TO NOT FIT RIGHT IN MY SHOES AND I WAS UST TO WEARING 4 TO 5 INCH HEALS. THE POINT IS I KEPT ASKING IS MY FOOT GOING TO REMAIN LIKE THIS 9MY TOE) I ASKED THE PHYSICAL THERAPIST AND THE DR. AND I GOT NOTHING. WHEN I WALK IT HURTS AND MY OTHER FOOT EVEN HURTS.I HAD BUNIONS ON BOTH FEET BEFORE AND I STILL DO BUT THEY HURT REALLY BAD NOW. IS IT BECAUSE THE LEFT FOOT TOOK ALL THE WEIGHT FOR 7/8 WEEKS? I ALSO STILL HAVE SLIGHT SWELLING, TINGLING AND THE ST TOES STIL DON'T HAVE MUCH FEELING. AND WHY IS THAT? THOSE TOES WE'NT OPERATED ON! OH! AND I CANNOT MOVE MY BABY TOE LIKE IT USE TO. ALSO FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAD THE HEEL PAIN I HAD IT AS WELL. I ADDED MORE CUSION TO THE BOOT. IT HELPED SOME BUT SOMETIMES I HAD TO KEEP AJUSTING IT. I'M WORKING ON WEARING STYLISH BOOTS NOW BUT BASICALLY I STILL SPORT A SNEAKER. IF ANYONE HAS COMMENTS OR CAN OFFER ANYTHING PLEASE FEEL FREE TO DO SO.

after surgery

I broke my 5th metatarsal bone in right foot, back in March had screw placed inn April because bone was not coming back together. I was then still off my foot til the end of June when they said I could put little weight on in in a walking boot, it was however as a lot of you had said painful, in the heal, ankle, etc. I put some extra foam on the inside under my heal. It helped some still using crutches until I went back 2 weeks later he wanted me to use none, yeah that was work, we get to August still having trouble with pain and walking go to my appointment he wants me to take the boot off. My foot still swelled, very discolored and still painful. I had no strength in it so physical therapy for a month, I now in October can walk most days with no trouble, but here to say it should all get better it still swells most days and when it rains or is cold I really know.

5th Metarsal fracture

I also had this 5th metatarsal fracture. Ortho Dr. decided to have me wear cam boot & crutches first 2 weeks, then without crutches, but still wearing the boot. Fracture was done on July 29th. The side of my foot back by the heel was very black and blue, also the toes and up front on my foot are just now coming back to color; also had tingling/numbness/cold toes. I think all is healing now, not quite so much pain, and will slowly transition into shoe. Not a good break to have

I am writing on this website because I had the surgery too, I had pain in my leg from the cast, at week 3 I finally asked to have it cut off because my toes were tingling and cool. they told me it was just related to immobilization. Well after they took the cast off the pain was still there. Had an ultrasound and confirmed a DVT, and clots from perineal veins down through my popliteal, calf and foot. Now I am seeing a vascular doctor, on blood thinning medication, and wearing a compression stocking.

Post Op Surg. From 5th Metatarsal FX.
by: LAUVEITH

I had 5th metatarsal surgery Aug 5th and on week two after surgery I stated to experience burning, numbness, tingling. Bad enough that I could not sleep at night. The gave me neuroton for the burning. I am concerned since it is now week 4 and still no improvement in the burning. When I touch the outside of my foot there is no feeling! What happened? I have read that the nerve block I received before surgery may be the calprit. I am very disappointed on how this going.

Me too!!
by: Cheryl

I broke my 5th metatarsal and had surgery on June 25th. If I did not elevate my foot often and ice it, it would start looking blue and bruised. I seemed to benefit the most from sitting beside the swimming pool and moving my feet in the water like I was swimming. (I did ask my Dr. about swimming before hand.)
Had my 6 week check-up last week. Xrays showed that it was healing well. My ortho told me that I did not need crutches any more - but should still wear the boot for another 2 weeks. I tried to walk on it while at the Dr's. office and told him that my heel hurt too bad and I would have to use crutches for the transition - he did not seem concerned. I have been hobbling around on one crutch trying to strengthen leg, ankle and foot, but my heel hurts so bad when I put any weight on it that I can't stand the pain. I just keep trying to push through the pain - hoping that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
I have done tons of research online and have not found anything that explains my pain. If I find any good answers for our problems I will post.

I had this surgery also, my foot is still numb, and tingling, with lots of bruising 3 weeks later. I am very concerned but I think there is some damage, but what it is won't show. I'm still in major pain, not a good sign. Bruising is around my ankle now. My 2nd metatarsal bone, which i have a high arch is so painful too, why? who knows? My ankle also is so darn sore, all this stuff, NOBODY wants to talk to me about. Why not share so that we can know what to expect for goodness sake.

I'm scared, I don't see the doc till another 3 weeks, I did see him post surgery 2 weeks and things looked okay he said. What is okay though? What is it I'm supposed to be experiencing besides being an invalid with pain.

Please - can someone be straight up with me? please.

It is normal
by: Bart - SII

The bruising you have in your toes is from the surgery - the internal bleeding that occured - that blood is now moving toward the surface, and gravity pulls it down to the toes. Nothing to worry about and it should start to go away in a few days or a week or two - it will also likely change colors from black to blue to purple with shades of yellow and green. Take pictures!
