ACL and meniscus repair

by Mary Christy

Iam 50 yrs old. I have a complete tear of the ACL and some meniscus damage. I am active walk daily and did in the past enjoy sking and ice skating. I have only some pain when hiking and a little swelling. But when I jump I have extreme pain in the knee like a knife cutting. Should I go through the repair surgery or just opt not to change my habits. I also work at the port of Los Angeles and do drive Machines and have to climb up and down. After the injury I had some buckling of the knee. But this has stopped. What do you recommend. Should I use my own patella for repair or the cadaver?

ACL reconstruction
by: Bart - SII

the decision to have the ACL reconstructed should be based on your current status and whether or not your knee is A)causing interference in your normal daily activities and B)how important your current activities are in your overall life - so, if you feel like you just can't get by without being able to jump or you are having problems that limit your normal activities and are not willing or able to change your lifestyle, then considering reconstruction is a good option. Discuss with your surgeon their anticipated prognosis for the procedure and then weigh your options.

The rehab is lengthy, but most people have good results if they put in the time to recover.
