ACL reconstruction surgery scheduled for 23rd January 2009

Hiya!

I am 23 I have key hole surgery for ACL reconstruction scheduled for 23rd January 2009.

I am very nervous and just hope everything will go to plan

How long does it generally take to recover from this type of surgery?

How long will I be off work for? (I have an admin based job)

I also have a 1 year old son so I know I will need a lot of help looking after him for the first few weeks!

Any comments will be welcome :-D

Good luck!
by: Lori

Hi there! I have a desk job, too. I had my surgery the week before Christmas, so I had some time off to recuperate before heading back to work. I went back to work about 2.5 weeks after the surgery, but I could have gone back a few days sooner (my work closes over the holidays). Working has been fine, but sitting up in an office chair was not comfortable on my first day back! I found I was getting up a lot just to loosen up.

The hardest part has not been getting around as much as it is navigating halls, etc. with lots of other people around. You definitely have to take it slow, and try not to move too fast to avoid obstacles. It helps if your co-workers know what's going on, so they can stay out of your way :)

Good luck with your surgery!

I also am having surgery on January 23rd for an ACL reconstruction, 2nd time on the same leg. The first time around, almost 3 years ago to the day, it took about 9 months for my leg to be completely recovered. I still used a knee brace for the next 3 months and weened myself off of that gradually. Don't know what kind of surgery you are getting, but I had an autograft using my patellar tendon.

As far as returning to work goes, I had a desk job at the time as well, I had my surgery on a Thursday, went to the doctor's office for a post-op exam that Monday, and was back at work on Tuesday. I was on crutches for the first 2-3 weeks, which felt like it took forever, but after you are off the crutches time goes back to normal.

Good luck with your surgery.

Key Hole
by: Tim

The key hole was the probably the best thing to happen to me after the injury. For me it was fine. I had a very swollen knee and not being able to bend a knee for a week or two does make you appreciate elevators. Once they cleaned up the knee and took away the bits floating around inside i was able to move freely until the full operation. I couldnt do sport but at least i could work the knee with exercises and get on a stationary bike without feeling pain.
