ACL tear surgery options + time factor

by Dan

So an MRI scan has revealed that I've completely torn my left ACL this was due to a martial arts accident 7 months ago involving twisting my left pivot leg during a kick. I've seen 2 orthopaedic specialists regarding surgery, and due to time constraints have 2 options:

a) surgery using a hamstring graft 1 month from now
b) surgery using a patellar tendon graft 9 months from now

I've read about the pros and cons of both methods. However, will time play a factor in regaining a stable knee as closely as possible after surgery? That is, will there be any disadvantages with choosing option b)?

Thanks,
Dan

Both the hamstring and patellar tendon graft options have relatively the same overall recovery timeline to return to activities and a stable knee - usually 6-9 months. This has to do with the incorporation of the graft as the new ligament and the healing of the body, as well as with rebuilding strength, balance, and endurance.

The hamstring graft option allows some to progress their motion a little faster because of no disruption of the patellar tendon, but the overall recovery is close to the same.
