Amanda's mother's day mishap

by Amanda
(New York, NY)

I tore my acl on May 10th 2009 during a mother's day soccer game. What a way to spend my mother's day! I am scheduled to have surgery on June 18th and I am very nervous about the procedure and recovery. I am 28 years old, have two small children, working full time and in grad school full time. Since tearing my acl I have already begun to loose quad strength, as I am still not walking normally. I am able to straighten my leg and bend it almost all of the way, but putting my full weight on the leg is painful. Does anyone have any suggestion of how I can strengthen my quad and stop the atrophy before the surgery?

Mother's Day mishap

Hey there! I am awaiting surgery as well and have many of my own questions.. but I was curious as to whether ur orthpedic wanted you to do any pre-op physical therapy. I was sent to PT so that I could strengthen my surrounding muscles to help my recovery time. I'd def talk to ur ortho and see about getting with a PT before surgery.. especially if you are already losing strength.

Thanks!

Pre Op Strenghtening

Amanda - DEFINATELY see you ortho & get some "pre-hab". It helped me. They had me working on quads/hamstring strengthening & ROM. I believe it helped me get back on my feet that much quicker. I had the surgery 5 weeks ago.

You are more than welcome to ask me any questions you'd like via email - rebakemp72@yahoo.com

I know what its like to have 2 kids & attend school at the same time - Keep your spirits up & keep the positive attitude!

best of luck.
