Ankle fracture rehabilitation time

by hemanth
(hyderabad,AP,india)

My name is hemanth and I live in India. I am 23 years old. In jun 08 I had an ankle fracture (medial malleolous and fibula at 2/3). It happened while playing football.

It was surgically fixed with two screws for the medial malleolous and a plate for the fibula. the cast was removed 6 weeks later and i continued using crutches for another six weeks while doing some range of motion exercises daily.

After that I returned to my college life. All this time I never had any noticeable pain. Now, 5 months after fracture I still am not having the complete range of motion and my ankle remains swelled. My physician did not emphasize very much on physiotherapy except that he asked me to walk for some time daily and move the ankle.

Am I in the right path ? Can I get into the football ground as confidently as I used to be in the past ? If so when can I expect that ?

You are on the right track - this injury takes a long time to heal and to be able to get back to running. You would benefit from rehabilitation - a therapist can help with getting your motion back, or at least improved with joint mobilizations.

Patients I have seen with this type of injury usually take 9-12 months to get back to sports.
