ankle injury still hurts

I sprained my ankle about 5 months ago, i stayed off of it for a week like the doctor said, then when i could run again, i went back to playing softball, it stopped hurting for the remainder of the season. About a month later it would hurt when i woke up or stopped on it to hard. Now I'm running cross country and when i run its really tight and stiff but loosens up a little bit as i keep running but doesn't feel 100% normal.

Any suggestion as to what i could/should do?

You are likely in need of a good strengthening and balance program for your ankle to get a full recovery. After an ankle sprain, once the initial inflammation, pain, and swelling subside, there is still work to be done to restore the normal muscle function. You are likely suffering from some muscle weakness and decreased proprioception, which will lead to the symptoms you are describing. A rehab program focused on balance and strengthening should help.
