Ankle injury (tendon subluxation)

by Steve
(Eden Prairie, Mn)

In 1995, I had a medial sprain to my right ankle which resulted in occasional subluxation of one of the peroneal tendons over the lateral malleolus. This was successfully corrected with surgery.

I tape my ankles now for support, but recently, after a football game and ever since then, I've noticed some sharp pain in the front or anterior portion of the lateral malleolus. It feels like possibly one of the extensor digitorum tendons is popping loose from its normal location. Is this possible?

I can't sprint and taping doesn't help. It's been several weeks and icing, soaking, and rest is not helping it. I'm going to ask my Dr. who I should see, but I thought I would ask your opinion as well.

Thanks

It is possible for the tendons to be subluxing, but that is not nearly as common as the peroneal subluxation, as the digitorum doesn't run in a specific groove like the peroneals.

Did you have any significant motion loss or scarring after surgery? You may have disrupted some scar tissue with your football activity.

These are just ideas - check with your doctor for sure, and avoid aggravating activities in the meantime.
