Ankle sprain still suffering a year on

by simon
(kettering, uk)

Just over a year ago now i sprained my ankle playing 5 a side football. I could not put weight on it for about 2 weeks. It was swollen, bruised black, and very painful. I had x-ray and everything came back fine with no breaks or bone chips.

I had physio both at the hospital and a local sports therapist. I am now back playing 5 a side again once a week, but when playing my ankle feels week, even painfull if i push myself hard. Then after the day i play i have pain for at least 2 days afterward before going back to normal.

Do you think this is normal or do i have a problem?

Probably fairly normal...

You are probably in need of continued strengthening and balance exercises for your ankle. It is very common to have feelings of weakness and or pain after returning to activities, especially if there was little rehabilitation, or if the rehabilitation didn't focus enough on improving muscle control (balance).

Check out the ankle rehab section of the site - should give you some ideas for what you can continue to work on.

P.S. Ankle Sprain Solutions is a good guide to the best ankle exercises to work on balance, strength, and muscle control.
