Baseball Throwing TimeTable

I am a 50 year old hardball catcher who had slap surgery in July (3.5 months ago). I am currently rehabing nicely and have just started weight strengthening. My PT is more of a wrestling guy than a baseball expert. Can you recommend a general timetable to begin throwing again? Is it feasible I can be ready to throw runners out by May?

throwing program

Every physician will have a slightly different protocol for returning to throwing activities following a SLAP tear. 3.5 months is likely long enough to be able to start a light toss program and a throwing progression in a controlled environment, but you should definitely check with your doctor before beginning any type of throwing progression.

I use a graduated program with my patients that takes them through a progressive intensity throwing program over about 8 weeks. The key is to gradually increase your number of throws, distance, and intensity over a period of time, closely monitoring how your shoulder responds.

Talk with your therapist about an interval throwing program. If they cannot provide you with a structured progression, I can send you a copy of the program I use for them to review and approve.
