Can torn lateral meniscus cause swelling in ankle?

I am a 56 year old female who plays soccer weekly year-round (indoor and out). My orthopedic doctor did a MRI back in February and said I have a torn lateral meniscus and degenerative arthritis in my left knee. Since she did not feel surgery was an option at this stage, she told me to take glucosamine and an anti-flamatory if necessary and (for extra exercise) to get rid of my treadmill and go to a bike or elliptical. I opted for the latter. She isn't too keen on my continuing to play soccer (it's my passion) but said to wear my brace. Said that it is not a matter of "if" but a matter of "when" my knee will finally give out.

I don't have alot of pain associated with the knee, but it does flare of every once in awhile. What IS happening is that I can't fully lock my knee as I can my right one and I have been having some puffiness/swelling (not severe) in my ankle area. Is this possibly related to my knee injury?

Thank you.

ankle swelling from knee injury

It is possible the two are related. If you lack full normal extension with activities, this can alter the stresses placed on the ankle, causing some irritation and swelling. It likely isn't a direct cause, meaning the swelling in the ankle isn't coming from the knee, but an indirect cause due to the changed mechanics of the knee.
