Carley's torn ACL

by John
(Ct.)

We are just beginning the process, my daughter injured her ACL(torn) on Jan. 14 2009 and we have seen 2 Orthopedic specialists. Neither doctor will perform an operation to reconstruct her ACL because of her age, she is 13. Carley has been playing sports( basketball and soccer) at a high level for many years and would really like to play again.Any feedback would be appreciated.

Try to Have Patience
by: Anonymous

They shouldn't do surgery yet - not so much because of her age - but rather because typically at her age, the growth plates haven't closed yet. We were lucky and even though my daughter was only 14, her growth plates had closed and we were able to have surgery.

I would talk to her doctor about sending her to physical therapy to do as much muscle and strength training as she can prior to being able to have surgery. This will make her post surgery issues much less unpleasant as well as stabilize her weak knee.

Good luck.

Same problem
by: Anonymous

I tore my ACL when I was 14; I played high level tennis, basketball, and soccer and had the same problem -- My doctor's wouldn't operate because my growth plates hadn't closed. However, I did get a special knee brace that helped me out and gave me an extra 5 years to play at a high level -- and let my growth plates closed. Ask your doctors if a knee brace might help her out.
