Catherine's Worries

my name is Catherine Green and i am 15 years old....5 month ago i tore my ACL playing soccer trying to avoid a hit in net. I have not yet gone for surgery but have some worries of my own... my biggest concern is that i wont be able to be goalie in soccer at the level i once was... soccer has been the only sport i have ever played, I will be so depressed if i can't play it any more....but i am looking for new suggestions of other sports i could play after my surgery???

back to sports
by: Bart - SII

Catherine, your worries are very normal - I think that everyone who tears their ACL has a fear of being able to get back to sports at the same level they were at before they got hurt.

Most people, especially young athletes, can return to sports after an ACL reconstruction. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to your rehabilitation, and it takes a good surgeon to perform the surgery, and a good therapist to give you guidance in the rehab. If you have all of those things and you work hard, you can get back to sports. It takes a lot of time, and most people don't feel 100 percent with their sports until after a few months of playing, but it is possible.

Talk to your doctor and your parents about the surgery and the rehabilitation - make sure you have all of the guidance you need in order to have the best success.

Good luck!

Bart

Hey! I'm going into my sophomore year of high school and i tore my ACL & Lateral Meniscus back in February at the end of basketball season. I did rehab for 2 months, and had surgery over Easter break. My knee is great now. It has been 3 and 1/2 months. I finished PT at 12 weeks, and started running. I can run 3 miles now, and my knee feels great!!!!!! I can play basketball and all sports on October 12. You will be back to playing, and with lots of hard work, you will be as good as you were if not better. That is my biggest fear as well, but if you don't get the surgery, you don't even get to play. Everyone i talked to said that it will take work, but i will be as good if not better than i was before my knee injury. Good luck, get the surgery, work hard, and be better so you can play the sport you love! Just one suggestion, get a functional ACL brace for running and sports. it will give yo so much MORE confidence in your knee!!! We all have these same concerns, check out other people's stories. Get the surgery!! You'll do great!!!!! Keep us posted on your decision and how you are doing. Good luck!!
