Delayed Bruising After Fractured Fibula

by Cindy
(Minnesota)

I fractured my fibula 2 1/2 weeks ago and luckily I do not have to have surgery. I'm in a compression boot and although I have swelling and bruising near the ankle and top of foot, a few days ago I noticed a lot of black and blue bruising on the back of my leg - mid-shin. I'm wondering if this is normal or if I need that area to be checked for injury as well.

It is normal...

The bruising you are finding is from the bleeding from the original injury coming to the surface. You will see this in lots of injuries, and it is especially true in the lower leg because gravity pulls the fluid down and the body has a hard time getting it absorbed.

If you are worried about it, or if you are having a lot of pain along the bruising, you may want to have it looked at, but I think it is probably just the fluid from the fracture and original injury.
