Derek's ACL surgery

by Derek Webster
(Scotland)

Hi Just thought I'd share my thoughts. I'm a 34 year old male. I originally ruptured my ACL almost 20 years ago while skateboarding (fell off a ramp from about 5ft and landed on one leg).
I should have had this repaired years ago but it wasn't offered at the time. I've had a history of the joint buckling or locking since the injury.

I started rock-climbing about a year ago and want to continue to do this without fear of locking or pain.
I'm now due to go in for a ACL reconstruction on Sun 31st Aug and have opted for the hamstring graft. I don't like the sound of the patella graft.
Quite apprehensive to say the least about the initial pain and then the recovery time. I've lasted 20 years without it so I'm currently hoping that it doesn't make anything worse. Will let you know what happens

Update on surgery
by: derek

Hi there, sorry for the delay. I'm now post op (4 days) and everything is going well. I've nearly stopped the pain killers and I've just stopped using crutches today. I can put weight on my leg no problem. Really glad I went thru it now as I can see the recovery might now be as bad or as painful as I thought. starting physio on tue I guess that will be the tough part.

Many thanks
derek

Good luck tomorrow with PT
by: Bart - SII

Just wanted to say good luck tomorrow starting PT. You sound like you are doing great, and I am sure that you will do fine with therapy. Remember, full extension is the key to recovery early on, so work hard on getting those quad muscles to fire and everything else will come.
