Dirtbike Accident

My son had a dirtbike accident 4 weeks ago. I was really silly and he didn't even realize he had damaged his knee until he tried to get up 2x and then looked at his leg and it was bent in an unnatural way. He went to the hospital the next day, they said he probably damaged his MCL, but would have to get an MRI. Within one week, he had the MRI and was told he had torn his MCL and ACL.

He has been on crutches and in a leg brace for the full 4 weeks. He went to the specialist today and was told that his MCL was healed pretty well and he should start physiotherapy for at least 3 months so that he gets full range of motion in the knee, stop using the crutches and the leg brace. Don't over do it but start strengthening your leg.

He said after the 3 months of physio he will do surgery on the ACL. The reason he wants to wait is because he said he only wants to have to go in and do the surgery once and if he does it now, my son does not have full range of motion in the knee and the surgeon will have to operate again.

I want to believe this, because it makes sense, but could someone tell me if this is true.

waiting on surgery
by: Bart - SII

It is very common to wait to perform an ACL reconstruction - most physicians will wait at least a few weeks in order for the swelling to resolve and for motion to be restored. There are actually studies that suggest that a reconstruction performed with an acute hemarthrosis can lead to excessive scarring after surgery and trouble regaining motion.

I would agree with your physician, not only to allow swelling to resolve and to restore motion, but also to allow the MCL to heal well before undergoing the ACL reconstruction.
