Dislocated left ankle, fractured fibula and tibia, ORIF surgery

by AF
(UK)

On 18th August 2009 I dislocated my left ankle playing soccer and also fractured the tibia and fibula (Weber C fractute). I had the ankle repositioned in casuality and 2 days later had an operation to re-manipulate the ankle into a better position. Due to excess swelling i didnt have another operation until 5 days later when i underwent ORIF surgery. I was then in a cast for 6 weeks until I was allowed to wear an air boot which i have now worn for about 3 weeks.

I am due back at the fracture clinic mid November for further assessment. All i can say is that yes it is painful and yes even the most simplest of tasks are painstaking and time consuming however you just have to do your best in the circumstances as whats done is done. Enjoy your time off, take up a hobby, read or do whatever you may to pass the time as from speaking with others it WILL get better and easier.

You have to be realistic as well in your approach to recovery and try not to 'run before you can walk'. Lets face it the mobility that you now have is never going to be as good as it was before and you may not be able to perform tasks that you did before to such a high level due to joint / bone strength however by keeping yourself fit and strong in the meantime you will aid your chance of recovery by ten fold. To many people focus on the negative when in fact you have all done really well to have come this far.

Keep going, listen to the medical practitioners advice and stay positive. It may be a cliche however 'there is light at the end of the tunnel'. It will take time and each persons recovery time is different however it is good to read other peoples experiences and views. I wish you all well in your recovery!!
