driving after lateral release knee surgery

by Kevin
(Cleveland , GA)

My 18 year old daughter had knee surgery performed 1.5 weeks ago. The doctor removed two pieces of stray cartilage and smoothed up the bone or cartilage behind the patella. He also performed a lateral release on her right knee. When should she expect to be released to drive?

Most medical personnel will take the conservative route when it comes to returning to driving and give you a long time frame, something like 3-4 weeks or longer. That is for liability sake.

When she should return is dependent upon when she has enough strength and control of her leg to be able to safely operate the pedals and control the car. For many this takes a couple of weeks, for others longer. The decision to return to driving is ultimately up to you and her and when you both feel it is safe to do so.
