Gaurav's ACL and medial meniscus injury

by Gaurav Bajaj
(Delhi, India)

Some 8 years back there as an motorcycle fall injury on left knee with doctor's prescription of rest only.

There after in two or three occasions (during 8years) the while playing (small jumps) the knee got locked and I fell down and have to take 3-4 days rest.

This time in Office with a very small jump knee could get the weight and I had fallen down. Doctor immediately for 10 days applied plaster.

MRI findings
edema in upper end of Tibia, lateral femoral condyle, hemarthrosis with grade II tears in the ACL and posterior horn of the medial meniscus- ?post traumatic.

The a senior surgeon first suggested surgery but decided to wait and watch & has again given bed rest of 2 weeks.

Question.
a. Is torn tissue repair itself naturally or with physiotherapy.
b. In my case is surgery best option so that these incidents do not repeat in future and results in more injury.(I work in office with desk job).
c. Your prescribed line of treatment.

Thanks in advance.

Look forward to hear from you soon.

Regards

Gaurav

The ACL and meniscus are not known to heal well on their own - it does depend on where the tears are located, but generally the ACL does not do well healing on its own.

Surgery may be the best option of you are involved in any type of sports activities or strenuous things. Many people can go without an ACL if they lead a fairly sedentary lifestyle, and some can even play sports. From what you describe with the continued problems, I would discuss all of your options with your doctor to find the best solution to meet the goals you have for your lifestyle.
