Hi! My very uneventful story is that I stepped out my back door onto my deck (maybe 4") down and broke the Distal Fibula, that and numerous dark bruises up my back side and leg. Went to ER they said yep it's a break, splinted it and told me to call the Ortho Sur. in a week. Finally got the appt and the Dr. seemed unconcerned and told me it was a "clean break", gave me a moon boot and told me to come back in 3 weeks for x-ray. He also told me to put as much weight on it as I can bear. As all of you know it takes a while to "bear down". So, after bruised and blistered hands, a sore right leg from hopping with crutches (1 week after the break) I started forcing myself to use the foot, he told me as much as I could bear, so to my surprise I was able to get my foot working again. The swelling is so bad I still cannot bend my foot upward though. So my concern after reading all the posts and seeing that most Dr.s have you stay off it I am wondering if I have a bad Dr. telling me to go for it.... He would not even show me the x-ray! I live in a small town and everyone told me he was the best of the two ortho surgeon's in town...Is this common advice and should I be concerned...I am 50 yr's old, and somewhat ove weight if it matters in the assesment.

Weightbearing
by: Bart - SII

The fibula is not a weightbearing bone, so it is fairly common to be placed in a walking boot and allowed to weight bear to tolerance. This is especially true if it is a simple fracture that is not displaced. So, I would say your Dr. is right on with his managment. The 3 week X-ray should tell how it is healing. Just don't overdo the weight bearing.
