help me out!!

I tore my acl on December 7th 2008 while playing soccer. As i fell to the ground i heard a massive popping sound. my initial reaction was that it might have been my joint making a noise and so i tried to run but the knee gave way and i realized that i had seriously hurt my self. doctor upon seeing me said that i had a complete acl and lateral meniscus tear and would require a surgery. he also advised me to have an mri to confirm the injury. the mri showed partial and not complete tear which perplexed the doctor as my symptoms were showing complete tear. after the injury i was having great difficulty in bending or straightening my knee.

even though partial tear does not always require surgery the doc advised me arthoscopy to determine the blockage in my knee. on 1st of jan 2009 i had an arthoscopy and the doctor confirmed that the MRI was wrong and that i had a complete grade 3 acl tear as well as lateral meniscus tear. The doctor advised me to delay the acl reconstruction surgery and do intense physio to build my quad muscles. It is said that the more you delay the surgery the better it is post op. after 3 weeks i reached my peek and built my quads to an optimum level. i was on an intense physio program and was squatting more than 75 kgs. since i body build my rehab recovery was faster than what my physiotherapist had expected. according to him i was ready for surgery. So off i went to the doctor who was amazed at my progress. But here is my problem . The doctor through out had said that i would need reconstructive surgery but when he saw me today he was shocked at my recovery and advised me that i should delay the surgery for another 6 months!!!. he claims that the way im progressing i may not need surgery! and that i will be able to play competitive sports. i find that hard to swallow as hours of research on the internet has shown that in order to recover 100 percent from a complete acl tear you need acl reconstruction. i may be an athlete but im sure im not one of the few cases where i dont need a surgery for a complete acl tear. please help me out. im thinking of getting a second opnion.

Go for it NEW
by: Anonymous

hey mate its been a year since i posted that comment. In june 09 i went ahead with the surgery and i can tell you, it was the best decision i took, Post op is intially tough but if you put in the time and dedication you come back really strong. Highly reccomend that you go for the surgery, trust me it got worse and the instablility comes and goes in flashes. If you still dont go for the surgery, i would advise you to buy Donjoy Acl Armour. Wear this sophisticated knee brace and you can play tension free with or without acl operation. Take my advice go for the operation. If the surgeon and post op phyiso is good, you will be back to 100 percent.

MRI wrong? NEW
by: Eva

I'm in a sort of similar situation. I tore my ACL playing soccer. MRI and OS (ortho surgeon) said full tear. BUT I did physio and now, 4 months after the injury, I have full range of motion, NO pain, NO instability. The OS wants me to have surgery, but I am now unsure. I am aware of the increased risk of osteoarthritis but I am leaning toward no surgery. I went to another physiotherapist for an opinion and he said if he didn't know my history, he'd discharge me as a normally healthy patient! Now waiting to get in to see another surgeon... but I'm leary on that too b/c of course a surgeon wants to do surgery! Perhaps my MRI wasn't clear or read correctly...
