Hot rub or cold based ointments?

by Dalvin

I have recently injured my meniscus.. A slight tear.. The doctor advised me not to undergo operation as may cause further complication down the road..

I do use ice wrap around my knee now but I was wondering what kind of ointments should I apply.. cold or hot?

Whichever feels the best

Ointments for musculoskeletal injuries are simply counter-irritants - although the may claim to have deep penetrating benefits, they usually simply irritate the skin to provide either a warming or cooling effect. This tricks the body into ignoring the joint/muscle pain and focusing on the warming/cooling sensations.

While they do not have a deep penetrating effect, they are effective in reducing pain and sometimes stiffness - so whichever feels the best is the one I would use.
