How Soon Can I Return to Moderate Exercise?

by IslandMom
(Andros Island, Bahamas)

It has been six weeks since I damaged my MCL ligament...slipping on wet pavement, my knee went inwards where it wasn't supposed to! I did the R.I.C.E., and have been using a knee brace for support.

I live overseas, and don't have easy access to orthopedists. Our base physician took X-rays, and saw no major issues; I took Dobobid for about two weeks, which helped. For the most part, my knee seems to be recovering well...if I sit for longer than 15-20 minutes, it's sore when I get up to move around. (Although it can be uncomfortable when I'm trying to sleep)

Stairs no longer bother me, although I tend to use the stair-rails to take pressure off my 'bad' knee...more precautionary than necessary. I would like to get back into a walking regimen. Is this something that I should attempt? Walking, by itself, doesn't seem to bother me.

Many thanks for any/all information!

Walking is good...
by: Bart - SII

If walking is not inherently painful, then gradually working into a walking regimen would be a good idea. The other thing you may want to try is some light strengthening activities for your quads and hips - leg lifts both straight forward and lying on your side will help with this.

Pain is a good guide for your progression - try to keep things pain free or relatively pain free. Ice when you are sore, and do things gradually.
