Howie ACL reconstruction - Kitesurfing injury

(Sydney)

I am a 29 year old male. Active sportsman (kickboxing, kitesurfing, gym etc.) and maintain a high fitness level.
2 weeks ago I tore my ACL and cartilage in my right knee. The following weekend my girlfriend of 6 years broke up with me leaving me to face things on my own. Everything after that happened very quickly from having the MRI to scheduling the surgery which I had on Thursday (3rd June). My surgeon's preferred graft is the hamstring and having done some research I agreed to go down this route. Fortunately my mum flew over so I've had help and support for the past few days.

Day of the Surgery:
Post the surgery I was uncomfortable but not in a great deal of pain. Once they discharged me I was able to get around on my crutches (have a supporting brace on) and felt generally ok. I know the various long lasting locals were still active in my leg so tried not to do too much.

Day 1 post Surgery:
The leg was particularly painful - especially at the incision sites. I was taking painkillers every 4 hours (Panadol & Ibuprofen). Not a fun day. Didn't even think about any exercises other than trying to keep my leg straight. Unfortunately had to get up frequently to go to the toilet as I was drinking a lot of fluids. This was rather painful - not in terms of taking weight on the leg but again just at the incision sites. I can see through the bandage that there was some bleeding there which I suppose is normal (not excessive).

Day 2 post Surgery:
Slept better than I thought but woke up as the pain meds wore off. Was a bit of an emotional day as my ex decided to collect all of her clothing and what not. Terrible timing I must say! Nevertheless the pain was somewhat better.

Day 3 post Surgery (today):
Pain significantly improved. I can fully straighten my leg but can't flex more than about 40 degrees. I am starting to do some basic exercises (foot pumps, ankle rotations, active flexion) but am nervous about doing too much too soon.

I have my first follow up appointment with the surgeon this Wednesday and am wondering whether I should see a physio before then. I am eager to return to my sporting activities within the next 3-4 months and want to ensure I do everything required to strengthen the leg and the knee without overdoing things.

Hoping for another improved day tomorrow with reduced pain and improved ROM.
