Is my current pain from not getting surgery?

by Cori Wright

I tore my ACL playing soccer when I was 13 (I am now 23), but chose not to get the surgery and continued all of my sports activities after it was healed enough. I currently am a personal trainer and still play soccer, and also am a wilderness guide that hikes 3-7 miles a day. It gets excruciatingly painful sometimes, especially after downhill activity, on the outside of my knee. It gets to feel like I cannot bend my leg very well and gets very stiff. Also, it almost feels like bone on bone? So I have two questions...

1) Does this sound like it is occurring because of my past ACL injury?

2) Could I be getting restless knee because of this injury?

Thank you!

acl deficiency
by: Bart - SII

An ACL deficient knee does not function the way a normal knee does. That means that there are added stresses on the internal joint structures, specifically the meniscus.

Your pain may be due to the ACL deficiency. There could also be other internal problems (like a meniscus tear) going on as well.

I would recommend seeing your doctor for an evaluation. They can provide you with a clearer picture of what is going on inside your knee, and the best course of treatment to help restore pain free activities.
