Jason's double pop...

by Jason
(Greece)

Greetings from Greece to all you fellow-sufferers.
My acl story began on 03Nov2008 during an amateur basketball game. As the ball rebounded off the board, I moved towards its direction, suddenly my foot got stuck on the wooden floor, my leg extended and all of my weight (220 lbs) fell right on my right knee, double pop, I knew it was a torn acl, had seen many team mates blow their knees over the years.

After an MRI and two clinical examinations, the acl tear was confirmed, however reconstruction surgery took place on 08Jan2009. Although no damage was done to my mcl or meniscus, unfortunately I was informed that I had sustained severe loss of cartilage and underwent arthroscopy on 13Jan09 (yes 5 days later!)to harvest a sample of remaining cartilage cells and send them to a special cell culture lab in Germany. The next step involves transplant of the cultured cells back to the knee. My next arthrotomy will take place in two months.

As far as the acl is concerned, I am day 6 post-op with major discomfort.
I have began flexion, extension and isometric exercises. Extension is 0 degrees, flexion is 95-100 degrees.
I try to keep on one crutch and can bear my full body weight at a standing point.

A hamstring graft was used for the reconstruction.

I am quite anxious to get back to work, does anybody have an idea how long it takes to get rid of the crutches and start walking perfectly again?

Best regards,

Jason

Had my autologous cartilage implantation on 03.24.09 on my right medial femoral condyle, in order to restore a 4 sq.m full thickness cartilage defect. It was a cake walk compared to my ACL recon last January. Everything seems ok apart from the fact that I have to be on crutches for 4 more weeks and stay clear from any heavy contact activities for a year...tough for a basketball maniac...

Progress (21d post-op) NEW
by: Jason

PT is going well. Quads are finally starting to wake up and make an appearance...
My doc was impressed with my ROM.
However, my knee appears to be a bit swollen and gets very stiff in the middle of the night, try to ice it as much as possible, in order to fight off the stiffness.
Hellen, thank you for your comments, my goal is to get off the crutches in one week. Although I feel I could walk fine w/o crutches, my doc prefers to wait a bit longer and examine me in one week's time to set the way fwd.
I guess the pre-op rehab gave me a good head start on a post-op basis.
All the best,

Jason

im very impressed you can put your body weight on it. WOW!
took me 7 weeks to get rid of the crutches and walk normally but I was 15 at the time and I have serious meniscus damaged. but from the sound of things you don't seem to have any!
I somehow don't think 7 weeks will apply to you, but i hope that's kind of helpful. good luck!!!

doing great NEW
by: Bart - SII

Your progress thus far sounds great - 2 weeks with full extension and almost full flexion is ahead of the game. Just be careful not to do too much too fast - and realize that a lot of times, you will have a small setback where you may lose a bit of motion, or have some increased pain or swelling. Usually this passes in a couple weeks.

Keep us posted on how you do - good luck!

Progress so far (14d post op) NEW
by: Anonymous

Have been working out rigorously on rehab exercises and had two PT sessions.
The knee fully extends, while flexion is currently at 135 degrees. The overall discomfort has retreated considerably, actually have been able to get 6-7 straight hours of sleep w/o pain killers.
Finally, I have also started to apply friction massage on the graft area, so as to avoid the build up of scar tissue.
Anyone out there with a similar story?

Jason
