Jim's terrible shoulder pain

by Renee
(Lacona, Iowa)

I'm writing about my 24 year old son, Jim. He has had 2 SLAP repairs and is in severe pain 24/7! No one wants to touch him now since the first two surgeries haven't helped. We even went to the University of Iowa to an orthopod who was supposed to be the best in his field. He can't help us.

Jim now has hip pain which I can only assume is labrum related. Is there some kind of disease that we are not hearing about that effects the labrums? Jim had a rib resection to relieve the numbness he had in his hands, that worked to some extent. I don't know what to do now....any suggestions? It breaks my heart to see this once active young adult hang around the house because he is in such pain and can't go out and enjoy his life, so much promise has now turned into his parents tears!!

Jim's Terrible shoulder pain
by: Gina

Jim or someone needs to do some research on the internet and get a Dr. who will help him. I've had 3 shoulder surgeries. I had a SLAP on the right one plus a partial tendon tear. It was a 1 and half year rehab on that. I had a biceps tenodesis on the other shoulder and am rehabbing that now. Jim should not be living in ongoing pain with nobody available to help. Look on the internet at the orthopedic depts. of any teaching hospitals near you or not too far away and then find some Dr.'s who specialize in shoulders and then find out if they are experts also in Labral tears. One of them is Frank Cardasco at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Website: http://www.hss.edu/about.asp He does surgery and research on Labral tears and is an expert. You can click on the Dr.'s and read about them. http://www.hss.edu/physicians.asp There are others also at that hospital and others. If Jim can't get any help out there, maybe he should think about seeing someone in NY. Other hospitals here are New York University Medical Center, Hospital for Joint Diseases. Jim should not be left to just suffer in pain and if there are no Dr.'s who can provide the type of surgery he needs there, insurance will usually cover it if he has to go somewhere else for treatment. You'd just have to go thru a lot of authorizations and approvals with them.
