Johnathan 12 yr old acl repair scheduled 09/29/09

by Olivia

I have an active 12 yr old that completely tore his ACL during the last 11 seconds of a football game. He is scheduled for ACL repair using a hamstring graft....not disturbing his growth plate...next week.
Any thoughts?

How is it now?
by: Anonymous

I have a 12 year ol son who is having his ACL reconstruction on thur. He also damaged his in 8th grade rugby. We are very nervous regarding the growth plate as he will be tall one day. Please can you update us on Johnathan's progress and growth development in last 2 years. Should we still go ahead or not? Thanks.

Brady's update
by: Mike

Brady had the hamstring procedure and is 7 months post surgery. On May 12th, 6 months post surgery he did his functional test. Brady's lowest score on his functional test was 92% and he scored better on his surgical leg than non surgical leg on the majority of the other function test. After the test we met with Dr. Cooper and he gave Brady the IPP program and cleared him to return to competitive sports as of June 10th. It was the best birthday gift as he turned 14 on June 11th. Further he is now participating in Performance Course, attending football camps, playing 7 on 7 and even wake boarding. Dr. Cooper put Brady in a brace (Rebel Pro by Townsend) and the only reason he did was because of his age. It took him about two weeks to get use to running, jumping and cutting with it but now no problem. In fact he just tested in Performance Course in the 40 yd dash and Pro Agility and his time was faster in both than it was before his injury.

We are pleased to date with the outcome but we continue to work on making sure we prevent this from happening again. I would highly recommend the IPP program when you are cleared to start sport specific drills. If you need a copy I will be more than happy to send you a copy of the program.

The process is long and hard but when done rewarding.

Take care,
Mike

Brady
by: Mike

My son 13 with 1:30 left in his 8th grade football game tore his ACL this past week. We have spoke with Orthopedic surgeon already and will meet with Dr. Cooper of the Carrell Clinic tomorrow. Our concerns and fears I would bet are similar with reference to the growth plate and what type of procedure is best for our son so they can make a full recovery. I have spent a tremendous amount of time the last week gathering as much information on the differnt types of procedure to repair the ACL and it appears that the standard determination depends on skeleton maturity based on the Tanner Stage chart for boys. My son we believe is early stage 4 and from our research and speaking with 2 sports orthopedics adult Transphyseal ACL sureger either Bone to Bone Patella Tendion or hamstring procedure will be an option.
Here is a link

I will know more tomorrow as we will speak with Dr. Cooper and we are to speak with Dr. Mark Sanders on Thursday. By the week end we should have a good idea of are options and I would more be more than happy to share with you. Regardless what procedure you Doctor recommends I know the success has more to do with the dedication, discipline and commitment to post operative rehab than the surgery.

I will keep Johnathan in our prayers.
