Kayla'a ACL Surgery/ Rehab

by Kayla
(Cincinnati Ohio)

I am 14 years old. I tore my ACL at my first high school soccer game. (I was a Freshman playing Varsity so it REALLY was my first game) the clock was running out and there was about 5 minutes left on the clock when one of my teammates kicked a ball over my head and i began to run. I'm pretty fast so I had my mind set on the goal. The girl saw what was going on and she began to chase the ball too. I should have known something was up because she began to slow down. I was so focused on getting the goal I didn't think anything of it. As soon as my foot touched the ball BAM!!! another girl that was totally out of my sight slid right into my knee cleat up! I was instantly down.

Season Done after only one game.

I had my surgery September 10, 2008 and I am 6 weeks out. The first days were the worst but as the weeks go by therapy gets easier and i feel stronger. I had the one with the hamstring.(not sure what its called). What I have noticed is there is barely any muscle anymore in my entire leg. I'm so not used to not having muscle and not having the strength to do what I want.

My doctor has told me that I will be able to run track in the spring. I try to keep a positive attitude and it works. My therapists are really cool and they make the process easier. THNX BEACON AND DR.CHA! The surgery was the easiest part for me. my leg was numb and that was the best sleep i've ever had lol. I can walk now and climb stairs without pain. I'm just waiting for next season. To really dominate.

The only thing i'm worried about is being scared that it will happen again and I wont be playing as hard as i used to, or I wont be able to play as hard as i want because the ability is gone.

Thnx, Kayla #15 =]

playing again

Kayla, thanks for sharing your story - it is very normal to have worries about getting back to soccer and whether you will be able to play like you did before. It will take time, but if you work hard in your rehab and don't try to go too fast, you will be able to get back to playing, likely stronger than you were before because of the rehab. Just keep that positive attitude and keep going!
