Kim's ACL recovery

by Kimberly

I have played soccer ever since I was 5. I am now 24. I have been playing the last few years on a recreational team. On November 14, 2010 I tore my ACL and lateral meniscus. An opposing player had the ball and I tried to kick it away from her and neither her nor the ball moved. It felt like kicking a brick wall. I felt a pop and my knee went from the left to the right side. I had immediate swelling and pain. I went to the doctor a day later and had an MRI telling me the news. I went to therapy a week later up until my surgery on 12/16. The first few weeks following my surgery I had excellent results in therapy. I am now at a standstill, I feel. I have excrutiating pain when bending and I cannot go any further than 90 degrees. Unless the therapist forces it which forces me to scream/cry. I am not sure if I have a problem or if this is just normal recovery. I see the surgeon on 2/3. Hopefully I can get some answers!!!

Ya, I ended up having to have a manipulation done to my ACL because I had built up scar tissue. It was so painful. As soon as I had surgery again, I felt great. It certainly isn't to the point where I was pre injury and weather also plays a factor in it. But make sure you bend your knee as much as you can and use the CPM machine like you should. I felt the CPM machine helped me and I had that discontinued about 2 weeks ago. But just make sure you keep bending your knee because if you are prone to scar tissue like me, it might happen. Goodluck with everything!

Feeling the pain too...

I had acl reconstructive and a meniscotomy(sp?) surgery 10 days ago. It makes me feel better reading your comments! I felt like I made more progress in my first week then I am now in my second week. Some days, or MOST days I feel like I am regressing with my rom :(

If it's a better day I get to about 90 degrees, but the second I get out if my Cpm machine, my rom immediately starts to decrease. It is SO very frustrating! My knee hurts really bad on the side I tore me meniscus. I wonder if that pain will ever go away bc it is reAlly keeping me frOm
Being able to progress. It's frustrating and it gets me down. I just want my old knee back that worked well pre injury!

Good luck guys with your progress! And thanks for sharing your comments!

Hi Kim

I'am currently going through the same thing you are experiencing with PT; my therapist also forces me to bend my knee and believe me it really does hurt!!!! presently I can only bend my knee at about 90-95 degrees on a good day. I had my first ACL surgery in Oct and the 2nd {manipulation} in Dec. And yet still no progress just 5 dys a wk agressive PT.

I'm hoping there is a bright light thru all this pain and misery!!!!!

Good luck to you!!!!!
