Knee Popping (flexion to extension)

by Gregory Lee
(Tallahassee, Florida)

My right knee makes about five popping sounds when I go from no extension to full extension. When you feel it, it seems to be the outside of the knee and the front of the knee that are moving causing the popping. This has plagued me for years after a hyperextension in football. It has prgressively gotten worse over the years just by walking on it for a long time. What could it be?

Popping Knees!
by: Shayna

After I torn my ACL I have noticed if i have weight on my bad leg and shift a little sideways, my knee makes loud pooping noises, lilke pooping your knuckles or fingers, except it is painful. it still have not figured it out and it only started about 3 months after the inital injury. kinda weird. Next time i go to my surgeon, i will ask about it and let you know what i find out. Maybe yours is similar?
I'll keep you informed when i go back in a few weeks!
Good luck

Sometimes it pops
by: Bart - SII

Popping after an ACL reconstruction, or even after a knee injury is very common. The key is whether or not the popping is painful. If it is pain free, then it is something that isn't necessarily worth worrying about, and just something to live with. Painful popping may be of concern as it could suggest meniscus pathology, or patella femoral joint degeneration.

Popping can be caused by many things - scar tissue, tissue adhesions, tendon hypermobility, and other things - but again, if it doesn't hurt, it isn't something to stress out about.
