This is a common occurance in young athletes. It sounds like you may be describing Osgood Schlatters syndrome. The area below the kneecap where the patellar tendon inserts on the tibia can become inflammed with activities. This is especially common in young boys, specifically after a growth spurt. Some physicians will call this growing pains.

When the body goes through a significant growth spurt, the bones outgrow the muscles and tendons, and can increase the stress on the insertions. The area where the patellar tendon inserts is especially prone to this. The good news is that most people will grow out of this as they mature.

Ice, rest as needed, and a good stretching and warm up program can sometimes help with this.

It would be a good idea to see your doctor to figure out exactly what is going on with his knees, and to find the best course of treatment.
