Lateral Meniscus Tear?

by Marie
(Madison, VA)

My doctor thinks I have a lateral meniscus tear. I re-visited the doctor when my calf started to swell. I thought I had a blood clot. He ruled out blood clot hopefully... Can a lateral meniscus tear cause slight but noticeable swelling in the calf area?

calf swelling

A meniscus tear doesn't usually cause calf swelling, as the fluid is contained within the joint most of the time. That isn't to say that it can't happen.

Did you have a traumatic injury, or was this a gradual onset of pain? If you have some episode where you injured your knee, it could be that you also caused some damage to extra-articular structures which has now caused some swelling in the calf.

I was jumping on the trampoline with my children. I don't remember any pain at the time, but about 30 minutes later I had stiffness and pain like a sore muscle. It has been 2 1/2 months now and I still have pain, slight swelling, sharp pain when squatting or kicking a soccer ball on the outside/back of the knee, sometimes the pain goes down the left side of my calf - It almost feels like the pain is on the inside of my knee - not something you can touch. Just recently I noticed swelling in my calf and upper shin area. My doctor thinks meniscus, I was thinking lateral ligament strain. Will a MRI show both?

MRI

An MRI will show both - and that is probably the best choice of diagnostics - it does sound, to me, like you may have torn your meniscus. At least with an MRI you won't have to worry about wondering what it really is.
