lateral release on medial side

I have danced all my life growing up and have hyperextended joints and ligaments. My doctors said that if there was still pain by the time I'm 21 a lateral release would be in order.

However they said it would be performed on my medial side due to my kneecap tilting medially. Does that make a difference in how the procedure is performed or looked at? I'm turning 21 and pretty much my only option is the surgery. I did rehab all through high school and it only seemed to make the pain worse.

I have been told since I was 12 I have patellar femmoral tendinitis and my meniscus is wearing down. I also have very swollen knees all the time.

Would the procedure help my knees to not look so swollen? Any information you have would be great.

Thanks

Medial release question...
by: Bart - SII

If you truly have medial tilt of your patella and that is causing your problems, then yes, a release to allow your patella to realign should help.

This type of procedure would be almost identical to a lateral release, only performed on the medial side. Medial tilt is not very common - I have only seen one other patient in 10 years with medial tilt - and it was treated conservatively with stretching and patellar mobilization.

I am curious as to why your doctors wanted you to wait until you are 21 before exploring surgical options. Did they give you a reason for the wait?

If your swelling is caused by inflammation due to the medial tilt, then a successful surgery could decrease the inflammation and the swelling.

Rehabilitation after your surgery, with a strong focus on hip abductor and external rotator strength would be essential for a full recovery.

I would discuss any questions you have with your doctors.

Hope this helps - comment back if you have other questions.
