Lateral Release Physical Therapy (what should be done)

I just had a lateral release 5 days ago. My doctor recommended a particular facility for my PT, however, my insurance didn't cover this location. Instead I am going to a hospital outpatient rehab. Please tell me how I know I am getting the type of rehab I need to return to running. I am a former marathoner and would be upset if I can't run again.

What types of things should I be doing? Exercises? Stim? Ultrasound??

Great Questions!

As far as rehab and what to expect - you will probably have some e-stim, ultrasound, cold compression, etc. All of these can be beneficial in controlling pain and swelling but it is important to remember that they treat symptoms for the most part, rather than treating the cause of the problem. I use e-stim with my patients because it feels good...the same with cold compression. I am not a big proponent of Ultra-sound, but that is a personal choice and philosophy.

With regards to exercises, I believe that any type of knee rehab needs to have a strong focus on hip and core strengthening, with secondary emphasis on the quadriceps. Also included are biomechanical considerations, flexibility, mobility, and balance.

Look through the Patella Femoral Syndrome Rehab section of the site - this will give you a good idea on what your rehab should be focusing on.
