Lee's ACL Road

by Lee Chapman
(UK)

Hi, Ruptured my ACL in August 09 and went to Doctors and had X-ray on it and there wasnt anything shown so then went to a physiotherapist who assessed my knee and came up with the result I may have tore my ACL, I then had an MRI scan and confirmed that I have RUPTURED my ACL, I have an appointment tomorrow at my hospital and hopefully will hear more about what is going to happen next

Any ideas on what the next steps are?

It gives way on the occasion and I cannot do ANY sport because it hurts too much and also grinds.

Thought I would write on here and join the storys

Thank You for reading and will keep you all posted.

suggestion... NEW
by: Anonymous

my patellar graft lasted for 5 years before i had to have it fixed. Too many sports WAY too soon. my suggestion is do exactly as the dr orders. dont baby it, if they tell you to bend it... do it. and dont think 4 months is enough time for it to heal. its not. good luck!

Patellar Results NEW
by: Doug

Wow, 5 years? Yes, I don't think I can wait any longer to do my ACL. Do you have any issues so far with your patellar graft? I'm still in the process of deciding. Any knee pain while kneeling?

petes acl 5 years since tear NEW
by: Anonymous

it's summer 2005 out flying modal airplanes, haven't done it since.
Anyway, I landed the plane on the wrong side of the fence so I decided to climb over a 6 foot fence and the grass on that side was approx. 18 inches high. so I landed in a hole that I didn't see, I could hear crunching sounds as I see my knee going 2 different directions.
After this I drug myself to the car and my wife drove me to the hospital. Took xrays of my leg in ER "don't worry about it, it will be okay" must have been an HMO.
After going home I hop around on crutches a few weeks, walking after slowly regaining some strength in my leg.
6 months later.... getting out of my truck I went down with pain laying there for a few moments I thought the pain would eventually go away.
A year later, at a bar watching a band and my leg gives out and I go crashing down on top of a table. The band stops playing, and everyone is staring.
Fast forward a few years, I have fallen down a few more times and occasional popping sounds in my knee.

Putting in a wood floor, as I am in the construction trade. Knee if feeling pretty good until I walk out to get a saw out my front seat. I turn to go back in the house pivoting I drop in pain (i think I turned white) Dr. followed up with a MRI and discovered I had a complete tear in my ACL and a torn meniscus, no more HMO, Its Feb 3, 2010 nothing to eat or drink after midnight as at noon I get ACL reconstruction Finally and I am getting the patella reconstruction surgery.
So my advice is...don't wait 5 years, it wont heal.

Did he mention anything about possible meniscus tears? It's common to tear a meniscus (or both) when the ACL is messed with. Good luck in your recovery!!

tHE NEXT STEP WILL BE TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR SURGEON WHICH TYPE OF GRAFT YOU WANT TO USE,PATELLAR OR HAMSTRING GRAFT AND THEN FOR THE NEXT MONTH BEFORE THE OPERATION WORK REALLY HARD ON BUILDING UP YOUR HAMSTRINGS AND QUADS.
