Life and Sports after ACL surgery one year out

My 11 year old daughter tore her acl playing Little League softball. She had surgery in Aug of 09 at the Children's Hospital in Boston, using her IT Band. We live in NY. She has just started girls 7th grade field hockey. At least once a week during practice her knee gives out and ends up swollen She has previously sprained the small muscle behind her knee. Any of you girls or guys have similar issues one year out from surgery? She has been in PT and working out pretty consistently and was wondering if this is normal.

Hi,
My son was very nervous about the surgery and after it was all over said it wasn't bad at all. It all goes very quick and they give them so much pain meds that they are in very little pain. My son took Hydrocodone/acetamin for about 3days every 6hrs and then switched to Motrin only. You will be shocked on how fast kids this age bounce back. We are 8wks out now and our biggest problem right now is he is wanting to run all around and be a normal 11yr old and he can't yet. That is very difficult for him to understand.
When is your son set to have surgery? How did you decide on what procedure you would do? ie..hamstring, patellar tendon, IT band....
Did the doctor first recommend waiting till he was older and had more growth before you had the surgery? My son still has one more surgery to go as he tore both ACL's.

My son is also 11 and is set to have surgery. They will be using his hamstring to create a new acl. It is being done in New York City. He is real worried about the surgery.

Wondering how your daughter is doing now? My son is 11 and just had ACL surgery 4wks ago using his IT band (Michelli reconstruction) He had his at Childrens of Atlanta. This was the Dr's 15th time doing this procedure and he said the only other dr. that has done it more was Children's in Boston. Would love to know more about your experience since we are just at the beginning, he is still in his immobilizer and waiting for the custom brace. Did your daughter wear a brace to school and daily activities in the early months?
