Meniscal tear in the knee

by Frank Klingenberg
(Montreal, Quebec)

Hi,
In June of 2008 as walking toward the bottom of a staircase it felt as if my left popped out of the socket, it was pretty painful. Can it be a meniscal tear? I find when I walk my knee seems fine but when I'm sitting down at the supper table after about 2o mins. it starts to get painful as well as when I sleep at night. I do work 12 Hr. shifts of 3 day's standing all day. Should I be wearing a knee brace or put ice & heat on my knee. If it is a meniscal tear what can I do in order to prevent surgery or is surgery the only option.

Thanks
Frank Klingenberg

meniscus tear?
by: Bart - SII

Frank, I would recommend seeing a doctor for an evaluation and diagnostic tests. You could have a meniscus tear, or it could be something else. Having an evaluation and a definitive diagnosis will give you clear options for the best treatment.

An evaluation and diagnostics is like having a road map for your injury - without it, you end up driving around blindly, just hoping to get where you are going.

A knee brace may help, but I would recommend seeing a doctor as well.
