meniscus tear (type of injury)

hello :)well i was just wondering what type of injury the meniscus tear is. Is it direct/indirect, soft/hard tissue injury or just simply an overuse or chronic injury.
I understand that RICER must be used for this type of injury...but what was it like 30 years ago. RICER wasnt around back then, so what was the treatment/rehabilitation and prevention back then?

meniscus tear
by: Bart - SII

The meniscus is a fibrocartilage structure, considered to be soft tissue. Most tears are acute injuries, suffered from some type of impact or twisting. However, over time the meniscus can become frayed and torn due to overuse.

I think rest and ice have been around for a long long time - it may not have been called RICER, but cold therapy has been a common treatment for many many years.

Previously, treatment for a meniscus tear was complete removal of the meniscus, through an open procedure. With the advent of arthroscopy, this became much less invasive, and over time the ability to actually repair some mensicus tears has evolved.
