More Ankle Recovery Questions (fracture)

What would cause a broken ankle to not heal correctly? Will I ever be able to walk again? Will I be able to play the drums again using a double bass pedal? Should my leg be off the ground when I sit resting it? Should the bottom of my cast be almost tissue thin?

Lots of good questions...

Thanks for all of the questions - I will try to make sure I get all of them...

There are lots of things that can cause an ankle to heal incorrectly - the most common is not following the immobilization guidelines - so not wearing the cast long enough. Most of the time, if you follow your physicians advice, you should do fine.

I don't know what kind of fracture you had, or how serious it was, but most of the time an ankle fracture does not keep a person from walking again. Depending on the severity, it could be awhile before you are walking normal again.

Playing the drums should be ok, once you get your cast off - you will probably have some motion loss, so some rehabilitation with an ATC or PT after you are healed will help get your motion and strength back.

Elevating your leg is a good idea when you are resting - this will help keep swelling down, and circulation going during your recovery.

The cast may be thin on the very bottom - this isn't uncommon, just make sure you aren't putting weight on it, as that could cause it to crack or shift.

Hope this helps - comment back with other questions.
