Pain in back of shoulder

by Hank
(Tucson)

I have a slight pain in the scapula area that usually occurs after weight lifting. I remember the pain started when I was just putting on a shirt. I can still lift weights with only mild pain on certain exercises like the incline bench press. I am not sure what the problem is though.

scapular pain
by: Bart - SII

In my experiences, pain in the periscapular region after activities is generally due to a muscle overload. Many times the scapular stabilizers are weak or dysfunctional, and so the other surrounding muscles end up taking over and working too much (like the upper trapezius and levator) After a workout, those muscles are irritated and can be painful.

The scapula and surrounding stabilizer muscles thrive on motion and being used. When there is dysfunction, they end up becoming weak and causing problems. You might benefit from a good rehabilitation program that focuses on improving scapular mobility and strength - I would recommend checking with your doctor for an evaluation.
