Pain in front inside of upper thigh.

by Chris Harmon
(Richmond, IL)

I am training to run my first marathon, and my longest run as been 19.5 miles. After that run I began experiencing pain in the upper portion of my left thigh when I lifted my leg. The next run I attempted was a 13.1 mile run and about two miles in the pain came back with a vengence.....I made it but it wasn't pretty.

I can do the elliptical for an hour with no pain. Now, I have the Marathon in two weeks. I read some articles that indicate it could be a stress frature to my hip YIKES......Any insight would be appreciated.

Thank You
Chris Harmon

describe the pain

How would you describe your pain? Does it feel like it is in the muscle, or more deep than superficial? Is it a sharp pain, a shooting pain, a burning, aching pain?

Femoral or hip stress fractures are not common, but as you are at the end of training for a marathon, it is possible, especially if you have been putting in a lot of miles without taking time to recover between runs.

I would recommend a visit to your doctor to get to the bottom of this. The last thing you want is to make it worse, especially if it is a stress fracture.
