Pain in the hip with cracking noise...

by Per
(London)

Thanks for your informative website! I'd be very grateful for your feedback in my case. I'm 36 yrs, very active and teach yoga. For about a year I've experienced some discomfort in my left hip after doing heavy squats and running. After a day or so it usually goes away. But lately it's been more severe and even given me some pain when walking. If I rotate my hip outwards there's a cracking, scraping sound, like bone-to-bone but without pain. If I put ice on the area it feels much better. Can this still be bursitis? I'm not swollen and don't feel pain on the outside of my hip.. Just resting for the moment and swimming a bit.

It could be bursitis, but is likely more related to flexibility and mobility. I would try some extra hip flexor stretching, as well as stretching for the low back and piriformis, hamstrings and calf. You may just have some abnormal movement patterns that cause added stress to the hip flexor. If it continues for much longer, get in to see your doctor.
