painful inside ankle bone

by Vic
(New Zealand)

My medial malleolus bone (I think that is what it is called)is very painful... It has had a permanent red mark on the ankle bone for about 4 weeks now, the pain is what I describe as burning stinging surges every so often... When I knock or slightly touch the bone it is excruciating.... I have had the lateral ligament of the same ankle replaced back in 1997 so I suppose ankle hasn't been the same...

About a month and a half ago my calve muscle seemed to spasm and somewhat felt like a muscle had started from my achilles coiled up to my calve and released again it was bruised for a while,I don't know if this has anything to do with it.... Hoping you could shed some light.. hoping I don't have to have another trip to the Doc

Thanking you

hey, i have been on the net trying to find out some things as well and i am having the same problems as you!! I have 8 scews and 2 plates in my left ankle which i broke just over 2 yrs ago and out of the blue it has just started being sore and swelling, i have had pain in my calve and shin, swelling, pain if knocked on the ankle bone and major stiffness, i'm still waiting to see my surgen as it takes weeks to get in to see them and i'm having a bone scan tomorrow to see if there is an infection around any of the screws or plates, if not most like they are going to take out the metal work ;-/ which scares me to death as i'm worried my ankle will not be as strong. Well hope you are feeling better soon with your ankle. regards Jenn

Best advice is to visit the doctor - an X-ray and an evaluation may help to shed some light on what is going on and figure out what needs to be done.
