Patella Dislocation-Need as much info as poss!Thnx

I badly dislocated my patella about 5-6 months ago. i was just walking and went under a fence and left my foot behind. it was my left leg, and the kneecap went that far to the left it was nearly at the back of my leg. i had to go to hospital and have it put back in place, then i wore a splint for 4 weeks and started physio.

i am still having physio.....it was getting better, but i still cant fully kneel down, and its started to give me a shooting pain everytime i walk/drive or stand on it funny either underneath the kneecap or the left hand side of the kneecap for the past 3 weeks.

the physio says it isnt tracking correctly and is considering taping it over but i don't understand what this would achieve long term. when i bend and straighten my knee, the kneecap is veering off to the left and seeing that has made me worry its going to happen again and i will never be able to ride a horse or dance again.

after this long, ive been told i still cant run, dance, swim or ride horses and i wondered if surgery would be an option and if so, which operation would be best for me.

i really would like to have surgery because i am sick of being constantly limited to what i can do. if i had surgery, what would it include, what are the complications and what would i need to do on recovery eg physio?

i cannot afford to go private so it would be on NHS, could i still choose which surgeon did the surgery? i am also scared of contracting MRSA. I hope you reply, and sorry its such a long question, thanks, from a fed up 23 year old female!

patella dislocation surgery
by: Bart - SII

Surgery may be an option, especially if you aren't having good results with the rehabilitation. From what you describe, it sounds like a medial patellar stabilization procedure, (sometimes called a medial reefing) or a medial patellafemoral ligament reconstruction could help stabilize your knee.

It is also extremely important that you are working on improving your hip and core strength and balance - that can help to improve the tracking of the patella.

Taping is a good short term option - it can sometimes allow for increased strengthening with less pain, however, it is not a long term fix.

I would discuss options with your PT and your doctor.
