Popping in left knee...

by Jamie
(Philadelphia, PA)

I am a 28 year old female. I have been running for approx. 10 years now. I do run mostly outdoors. For a few years, I ran a hilly course of 5 to 10 miles. For a few years now, I have had a chronic popping in my left knee.

I get what feels like a fullness in my knee and automatically feel the need to "pop it". It pops when I go upstairs or when I bend down. It's not painful. Actually, it feels kind of nice (like cracking your knuckles). Periodically, I have had a week or so of pain with this particular knee. Years ago, my knee gave out on me and I went to the ER where xrays were performed. Nothing was observed on the xray.

Any ideas?

The popping you are experiencing could be from several different things - you could have a small tracking problem with your patella that causes it to shift in the femoral groove when you bend your knee, it could be a rough spot on the back of the patella in the cartilage. I would guess that you just have a little alignment problem that gets your knee to pop. The fact that it doesn't hurt, and actually "feels kinda nice" is a good thing. Some people just have knees that pop. Unless it is causing pain, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

(my knees pop, just like you describe, almost every time I get up from a cross legged position - never hurts, kinda feels good)
