possible causes of pain following a shattered ankle

by Lorraine
(Ireland)

Hi. My name is Lorraine form Ireland and i'm 27 years young! In June this year I was involved in a car accident and as a result I shattered my left ankle. I had surgery which involved 2 plates and 10 screws being placed in my ankle. 6 months later i'm experiencing alot of pain in my ankle, especially to the back of my leg (mid calf-top of heel). Also at times it feels like I cant put any weight on it. I've had new x-rays but all looks ok. Any suggestions of what may be causing this pain?

ankle pain

Range of motion loss, scar tissue, muscle weakness, and continued healing can all be causes of pain after this type of injury. If you are still lacking in your normal ankle motion, this will cause abnormal stress on the joints when weight bearing, leading to discomfort.

Recovery from a significant injury like this will likely take 12-18 months, and occasional pain and achiness is very common even after that time.

Did you go through rehabilitation after your injury? Strengthening and balance activities as well as mobilizations to regain your motion could help.
